Chris Jones & The Night Drivers
"If ever you tune in to Sirius XM Channel 61 a.k.a. Bluegrass Junction on your afternoon drive, you've heard the voice of DJ Chris Jones, one-time IBMA Broadcaster of the Year. Off-air, with the Night Drivers picking behind it, that same voice is at the heart of a different sort of bluegrass sound. The solid material much of it written or co-written by Jones is traditional enough, peppered here and there with progressive licks (the bluesy, mandolin counterpoint of "What You Do" is one example). But the vocals are miles away from the hard-edged, high-and-lonesome sound that's long been associated with straight-ahead bluegrass. Jones and the current incarnation of the Drivers (including bass-playing Scene contributor Jon Weisberger) are celebrating the release of Lost Souls & Free Spirits, a best-of compilation drawn mostly from albums cut for Rebel Records toward the end of the '90s, plus a few new tunes. Jewly Hight"
