Alexa Weber Morales - Latin-Jazz SInger-Songwriter
Singer-songwriter Alexa Weber Morales combines clarion vocals, high-voltage rhythm and emotive power in one package. Fluent in four languages, she fearlessly crosses borders with lush, acoustic jazz, boleros, salsa and samba.
Reviewing Morales' 2005 debut CD, Jazzmrica, Chuy Varela of Latin Beat said, "Alexa Weber Morales is an artist just waiting to happen....[Her new CD is] a patchwork of African- derived jazz fusion that is swinging. The hemispheric diversity is delightful .... She is a jazz singer at heart but with a soul that sees no borders.
During her May shows at Pearl's, Morales will be celebrating the release of her new CD, Vagabundeo/ Wanderings.
Alexa Weber Morales writes songs about smoldering obsessions, resourceful outcasts, captured sinners and freed spirits. A Berkeley native, she has performed with Carlos Federico, Dave Mathews and Carlos Oliveira. She honed her Afro-Cuban skills studying at the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba, culminating her stay in a performance for the national conservatory.
Reviewing Jazzmrica for the Contra Costa Times, critic Andrew Gilbert called Morales "[a] captivating multilingual singer/songwriter," adding, "Morales delivers every song with a specific point of view, treating each piece like a carefully polished gem.
Morales will be backed by a sensational band featuring trombonist Wayne Wallace, pianist Frank Martin, bassist Sam Bevan, drummer David Flores and (on Friday and Sunday) percussionist Edgardo Cambon, with plenty of special guests sure to drop in as well.
