Pete Fallico Presents: Wil Blades - The funkiest and bluesiest Hammond B3 organ combos
Wil Blades, singled out by Downbeat critics as a "rising star" among jazz organists in a recent issue of the magazine, will bring his quartet to San Franciscos Jazz At Pearls Thursday, Nov. 29th. Along with Blades on the Hammond B-3, the quartet includes some the Bay Areas finest young talent. The performance at Jazz At Pearls, one of San Franciscos premier jazz clubs, celebrates the release of Blades' debut album, Sketchy, on the Doodlin Records label. The new CD features Idris Muhammad Dayna Stephens, Will Bernard, Gabe Eaton and Mike Rinta.
Jazz Organ master, Dr. Lonnie Smith, says "Yeah, he does it...he's on it. He is the future to carry on the legend, the legacy of the organ, [of] the B-3."
Wil has kept the traditional sounds of Jimmy Smith, Larry Young, and "Groove" Holmes alive while creating a more personal, modern sound. His playing is rhythmic, funky and bluesy, yet his original compositions are harmonically intriguing and unique.
Current musical collaborations include groups with guitarist Will Bernard, Jazz legend Idris Muhammad and a duo project with drummer Scott Amendola. Wil has recently signed with Bay Area record label Doodlin Records and released his debut record Sketchy on August 20th, 2007.
Wil's rhythmic, blues driven style is reminiscent of Jimmy Smith, Larry Young, and "Groove" Holmes, but stays in touch with current sounds. Wil has performed and recorded with legendary artists such as John Lee Hooker, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Melvin Sparks, Idris Muhammad, Soulive, Don Braden, Betty Joplin, Will Bernard, Eddie Marshall, Herbie Lewis, and many others.
For the last four years, Wil has maintained the position of house organist at John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom Room and teaches at the renowned Berkeley Jazz School. His playing has gained respect from audiences and musicians alike.
Originally from Chicago, Wil Blades has become one of San Francisco's top organists. Wil has been wowing Bay Area audiences with groups like, "O.G.D.", "Steppin'" and "BluesBeat".
Wil has been performing since he was ten years old, and has played professionally in the Bay Area since his first year of college as jazz studies major at the New College of California. He began playing and studying drums at the age of 8, guitar at 13 and organ at 18. He has also received tutelage from jazz organ great, Dr. Lonnie Smith.
