Marcus Shelby Residency - featuring Howard Wiley
Marcus Shelby is often called a "Renaissance Musician," earning well-deserved acclaim as a bandleader, bassist, composer and arranger. He's well know as the leader of the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, but Shelby first made his name in the Bay Area as the leader of a fiercely popular trio, earning his spot in the forefront of an exciting new generation of San Francisco jazz artists. Starting In October Marcus Shelby presents Howard Wiley-sax Matt Clark-piano Jeff Marrs/Darrel Green-drums Marcus Shelby- bass "The Marcus Shelby Quartet featuring Howard Wiley (tenor), Matt Clark (piano), Darrell Green(drums) brings 4 of the fiercest bop players in the Bay Area to Pearls for a reunion of old friends! Matt Clark and Marcus Shelby recorded together in 1998 and 1999 on Shelby's trio recordings but then relocated to New York. Back in the Bay Area, Clark is one of the most remarkable jazz pianists playing today. Together with Shelby, the powerhouse Howard Wiley on tenor and talented young lion Darrell Green on drums, Clark's return is sure to make Tuesdays at Pearls one of the most exciting gigs in town!"

Born in February 1966, Marcus Shelby has been playing the acoustic bass for 23 years. In this time, he has built a diverse and accomplished biography. Shelby was bandleader of Columbia Records and GRP Impulse! Recording Artists Black/Note and is currently the Artistic Director and leader of The Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, The Marcus Shelby Septet and the Marcus Shelby Trio. In addition, Shelby holds an instructor position at the Berkeley Young Musician Program, San Francisco State University and the Stanford Jazz Workshop and is the 2006 Fellow in the Resident Dialogues Program of the Committee for Black Performing Arts at Stanford University. As the 1991 winner of the Charles Mingus Scholarship, Shelbys studies include work under the tutelage of composer James Newton and legendary bassist Charlie Haden. Recent honors include the City Flight Magazine 2005 award as one of the Top Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area.
