Nurture the Noise featuring MHS Students and guest Hilken Mancini
The Nurture the Noise series pairs Medford High School students with Boston-area musicians and allows them to connect about life as a professional musician in a closed discussion. Students are able to discuss with their special guest a variety of topics including the process of creating original work, marketing yourself as a musician, stage presence and many more. The night culminates with a set of music by the students, as well as a set a set by the featured performer.
Our featured performer for the second performance of the Nurture the Noise series is Hilken Mancini.
Mancini co-fronted the band Fuzzy in the 1990s and was signed to Atlantic Records. Most recently she was featured in Rolling Stone as having written one of the top 50 songs of the 90s. In 2000, she co-founded Punk Rock Aerobics, the anti-exercise regime that created a fitness revolution, and released the book Punk Rock Aerobics: 75 Killer Moves, 50 Punk Classics, And 25 Reasons To Get Off Your Ass And Exercise through Perseus. The book was featured in the New York Times, Newsweek, People Magazine, Rolling Stone, MTV and VH1. After volunteering at the original Rock & Roll Camp for Girls (PDX) she co-founded Girls Rock Camp Boston and is currently their Program Director. She plays guitar in two bands in Boston: Shepherdess and The Monsieurs, released on Slovenly records. She owns a vintage clothing store in Boston called 40 South St.
