FarmStrong
Pure, distilled country music with harmonies as smooth as velvet are on tap as FarmStrong takes the audience beyond bluegrass during a performance to benefit the Peninsula College Foundation, October 21 in Peninsula Colleges Maier Hall, starting at 7:00pm.
FarmStrong is an acoustic music collaboration of four fine musicians from the Olympic Peninsula. Jim Faddis fronts the band with a distinctive vocal style that draws all of the emotion from a song, and has caused more than a few tears in the eyes of audience members. His solid rhythm guitar reflects his experience of heading one of Eastern Washington's greatest bluegrass bands, Prairie Flyer. Cort Armstrong has been singing with Faddis for a few years, as well as providing a finger-picking style of lead guitar, reminiscent of Merle Travis. Rick Meade completes the vocal trio at the heart of FarmStrong's sound, and his multi-instrumental virtuosity and substantial performance experience has helped forge a truly clean and solid band sound. John Pyles brings 50 years of bluegrass and bass playing experience to the band, and the four members have developed a very effective song arranging approach.
Kevin Brown, a DJ for Spokane Public Radios Front Porch Bluegrass, has some kind words to say about FarmStrong's sound At times reminiscent of early Seldom Scene or even The Country Gentlemen, the arrangements mine the bluer, sparser side of bluegrass that is too often passed over by younger, unweathered bands fixated on speed and pyrotechnics. Jim Faddis and Cort Armstrong are both strong, emotional singers, but together they establish a natural, brother-like chemistry... With a great blend of spine-tingling vocals, seasoned performers and strong material, this is a band to watch!
FarmStrong recorded their debut CD, Live In Dungeness The Summer Sessions, in June of 2013, in front of a live audience at Dungeness Community Studios, where the bands community not only supported the event, but also became producers of the CD. FarmStrong's second CD, Forever, was recorded and released in 2015, a features a substantial departure from the bluegrass song bag, including songs from The Band, The Cars, Ry Cooder, Rodney Crowell and a handful of original songs form Faddis and Armstrong.
