LISA ROTHMAN ------------------------------------------------- "The Darkest Day of the Year"
Lisa's waiting in line for an acorn pouch. She's brought her family to the Winter Solstice Carnival at a private school in Marin not far from where she herself grew up, lonely, reading and re-reading the smutty passages from Judy Blume novels. All the other mothers are wearing yoga pants. Lisa looks terrible in yoga pants. This was a bad idea. Lisa wishes she hadn't come and right then, her fairy godmother appears! But not to bail Lisa out. No, instead she's hell bent on getting Lisa's son to see the dragon on the roof What? You don't want your child to see a dragon but you send him to public school in Oakland?
LAURA HEDLI ---------------------------------------------------- Overtime
While others are waiting in lines outside of Trader Joe's, hoping to get their hands on the last 16 oz. Dasani before Hurricane Sandy makes landfall in New York City, Laura is out drinking. Gin. With her coworker who's stashed his bike in her living room, so there's a pretty decent chance he'll stay the night. Two mornings after, after the Metropolitan Transportation Authority suspends all subway service, Laura's boss pulls up to her apartment in a black Mercedes and says to pack a bag. Laura will be staying with her for the duration of the storm. Work mustn't halt in the face of imminent natural disaster.
ADY LADY ------------------------------------------------------ "Sara Jane Tried to Shoot the President"
When Ady was born, Sara Jane helped make the bassinet. Then she tried to kill the president. After years of having this woman float around the periphery of her family, Ady is finally meeting her. Through metal detectors, surly prison guards, and hallways made of barbed wire, Ady hopes to make a good impression on the attempted assassin with a penchant for cross stitch.
