Twin Cities Chekhov Festival: A Water Bird Talk & On The Harmful Effects Of Tobacco
A Water Bird Talk: Nautilus Music-Theater presents Dominick Argentos opera A Water Bird Talk, based on Chekhovs On the Harmful Effects of Tobacco. Tenor Gary Briggle is joined by director Ben Krywosz and pianists Sonja Thompson and Tom Linker in this brief glimpse into the inner life of an amateur lecturer whose presentation on water birds moves unexpectedly from comic quirkiness to existential despair.
On The Harmful Effects Of Tobacco: Chekhov originally wrote On The Harmful Effects of Tobacco in 1886 and during the next 6 years, he re-wrote it half a dozen times. The monologue ranges from comic to tragic as Ivan Ivanovitch Nyukhin delivers a lecture on the harmfulness of tobacco at the request, in a manner of speaking, of his wife.
