Sonikete Blues @ Kuumbwa Jazz features Flamenco Dance and Los Angeles Jazz Artists
On Sunday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m., Kuumbwa Jazz Center hosts an outstanding performance that blends roots Gypsy song and dance from Andalucía, Spain with Delta Blues and Jazz. The performance, entitled Sonikete Blues features music written by Los Angeles guitarist/vocalist Ethan Margolis and innovatively incorporates top musical talents of the Flamenco and Jazz genres. According to Margolis, who was actually born in Santa Cruz and later lived in Spain for 11 years among the Gypsy community, the performance demonstrates that anything is possible when people work and learn together.
The concert furthers previous investigations by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Chick Corea involving essential similarities between jazz, blues and flamenco music. Margolis's band for this show features jazz stars such as Deron Johnson (pianist for Miles Davis), and Katisse Buckingham (woodwinds for Billy Childs) as well as special collaborations by the Gypsy singer Juan Bacán and the virtuoso dance soloist, Cihtli Ocampo.
