Twin Cities Chekhov Festival: The Island & The Witch
The Island: In 1890, Sakhalin Island, and the prison colony established there, was extreme in both its distance from civilization and its alienation from society. The Island brings life to Chekhov's under-appreciated story that cleverly blends scathing political commentary inside a meticulously detailed travelogue. Combining live action and film, the play compliments the vastness of an arduous trans-Siberian trek with Chekhov's private reckoning with his own mortality.
