Join archivist Bill Shelley for a celebration of the legendary Swedish band that inspired Mamma Mia
Few bands have given their fans as much pure musical pleasure as ABBA. Their irresistibly catchy songs enthralled countless music lovers, and the musical Mamma Mia has introduced their work to many more. Join us for a one-night-only celebration of the legendary Swedish band featuring rare films of the band performing live, including such hits as Waterloo, Dancing Queen, Fernando, Take a Chance on Me, Mamma Mia, I Have a Dream, Chiquitita, S.O.S., The Winner Takes It All, and many more. ABBA is an acronym of the first letter of each of the band member's first names. ABBA burst onto the international music scene by winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with their song, Waterloo, translated from the original Swedish into English to connect with a larger audience. They became one of Sweden's most commercially successful imports, topping the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1982. Little did the performing songwriters Benny Andersson (from The Hep Stars) and Bjorn Ulvaeus (from The Hootennany Singers) know when they teamed together and asked Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad (Benny's girlfriend) and Agnetha Faltskog (Bjorn's wife) to sing back-up that the chemistry that the four created would push them to international acclaim. Known for bouncy, up-tempo songs and mind-haunting melodies, this Swedish group that sang phonetically in English created a rich body of work that later inspired the stage musical, Mamma Mia (which then became a movie of the same name), and became a focal point of the movies Muriel's Wedding and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. ABBA was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. No ABBA fan will want to miss this thrilling night of rare television performances, live concert footage, studio footage, and promotional films. Forget your cares and join Rock Legends Live's tribute to ABBA!
