We will honor three people who exemplify Frances Perkins' integrity, work ethic, and commitment to social justice.
INTELLIGENCE AND COURAGE AWARD: Franklin (Frank) D. Roosevelt, III is a progressive economist who has spoken eloquently on the efficacy of New Deal programs and the relevance of progressive economic analysis in responding to the challenges of today's economy. He is Professor Emeritus at Sarah Lawrence College.
STEADFAST AWARD: Dale McCormick was the first woman in the country to complete a carpentry apprenticeship with the carpenter's union. She also helped found and was the first President of Equality Maine. McCormick won a seat in the Maine Senate in 1990, serving three terms. Most recently, she served as Director of the Maine State Housing Authority from 2005-2012.
OPEN DOOR AWARD: Kathryn Edwards, a former Research Assistant at the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), co-authored A Young Person's Guide to Social Security, a comprehensive curriculum to teach young people about the social insurance program. Edwards is pursuing her Ph.D. in economics at University of Wisconsin, Madison.
A reception with hors d'oeuvres and cash bar will be held in the Longfellow Garden.
Garden Party DATE: August 16, 2012 TIME: 4:30pm - 6:30pm LOCATION: Brick House Historic District, Newcastle
Wine, refreshments, and hors d'oeuvres provided. Transportation from downtown Damariscotta provided by Country Coach.
This year's Garden Party will feature a keynote address by Kathryn Edwards, our Open Door Award winner. Caroline McIntyre, a Chautauqua performer and playwright, will also present her one-woman show on Frances Perkins. Professor William Leuchtenburg of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, will chair our celebration.
Tickets: $40 per person or $60 for one ticket to each event.

The Frances Perkins Center, named for the first woman U.S. cabinet member, is a 501(c)3 charitable organization located in Damariscotta, Maine. The Center carries forward Perkins' commitment to social justice and economic security by fostering discussion of New Deal policies and by planning for the preservation of the family homestead in Newcastle, Maine. Our office at 170A Main Street in Damariscotta is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-2pm.
