Autumn Rhapsody - Melodia Fall Concert Sun. Nov. 20
Autumn Rhapsody offers on a rare performance of Vivaldi's Magnificat, performed in the way that Vivaldi originally composed it - by women's voices. In contrast, audiences will hear two textural, beautiful works by 20th/21st century Estonian composer Ola Gjeilo, and the U.S. premiere of Belgian composer Rudi Tas' Seven Blake Songs. Melodia will also perform a vocal arrangement of Largo from Dvorak's New World Symphony as part of the New York Philharmonic's 175th Anniversary New World Initiative. Our arrangement is from a collection entitled Song of Survival, created by Margaret Dryburgh and Nora Chambers, who were among hundreds of women imprisoned in an internment camp in Sumatra in the East Indies during the Second World War. We are bringing the arrangement to the New World Initiative and to our audiences as a tribute to the women who sang to survive displacement and imprisonment in 1942 and to those who sing to create a better world everywhere. Additional performance Sunday, November 20.
Additional date: Saturday, November 19 at 7:30 PM.
