Mysterious Skin
2004, Dir. Gregg Araki With Brady Corbet, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Elisabeth Sue 105 min, 35mm
Based on the novel by Scott Heim, Mysterious Skin explores the long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse on the trajectories of two young men. Decades after incidents of molestation, two long-ago friends have taken very different paths: Brian (Brady Corbet) is a shy introvert who is obsessed by his possible UFO abduction and has blocked the abuse from his memories, while Neil (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has become a highly sexualized hustler headed for the big city. As their paths move closer and closer to reconnection, they begin to discover what happened to them years before, and how this has shaped the rest of their lives.
