The Living End
1992, Dir. Gregg Araki With Mike Dytri, Graig Gilmore, and Mark Finch 92 min, 35mm
Presented on digital restoration, Araki's The Living End premiered at the Sundance Film festival, where it became synonymous with B. Ruby Rich's New Queer Cinema movement.
When the young film critic Jon (Craig Gilmore) learns that he is HIV-positive, he runs across the HIV-positive hustler Luke (Mike Dytri), who has just escaped the clutches of lesbian serial killers. Unsure what to do with the little life they feel they have left, the pair embark on a love-fueled crime spree road trip. Exploring the emotional experiences of fear, loss, and the uncertainty of HIV, The Living End humorously and honestly tackles the effects of HIV on Generation X.
