Clairemont: The Village within a City
The Modernism Committee of Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) is proud to present Clairemont: The Village within a City, a historic architecture tour on Saturday, August 11. This self-driven tour takes Mid-Century modernism fans through the architectural treasures of one of the nation's first and largest planned postwar communities.
At the end of World War II an influx of families began to settle in America's Finest City and the need for additional housing and recreation spaces became clear. Developers jumped at the opportunity and as a result Clairemont is home to many of San Diego's Mid-Century modern public spaces. Designed to accommodate the needs of the greatest generation, the subdivision catered to the modern family, their car and the ideals of the American dream.
The comprehensive tour introduces visitors to over 40 of Clairemont's best Mid-Century modern buildings including libraries, schools, religious institutions, and residential neighborhoods. Learn about the people behind the development of the Village within a City and indulge in the spirit of post-war optimism.
The registration begins at 9:30am with a lecture and orientation beginning at 10am by noted local historian and long-time Clairemont resident Alexander D. Bevil.
