HUSH: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
HUSH and step back to a time before television, during the advent of the automobile, and before the urbanization of America. Once home to 14 theaters, Somerville was the most densely populated city in the country, and going to the movies was a social experience where people came together to share news, gossip and be entertained. A century later we celebrate the art of silent film with live music performed by Noxaphonic, curated by Erica Baptiste and presented by The Rockwell.
October 5th features The 1920 German silent horror film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. A visually striking film which tells the story of a sinister hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to commit murders. Known as one of the most influential films of the silent era it has been described by Roger Ebert as "the first true horror film." As they reimagine this cult classic through sound art, Noxaphonic will be accompanied by special guest John Tyler Kent on the Chapman Stick, an extremely unique instrument known for creating a myriad of different sounds and textures. John has studied at Berklee College of Music and has performed professionally as a multi-instrumentalist for many years. Running time 71 minutes, Unrated with parental advisory. Additional Information can be found on our website.
Recently renovated and re-branded from The Davis Square Theater, and formerly Jimmy Tingle's Off Broadway, The Rockwell is an intimate black-box style theater that hosts over 300 live performances annually from local acts to national headliners. A full bar with concessions compliments the varied shows which range from Burlesque to children's programming.
Noxaphonic is a music duo that includes a revolving door of musicians. Dan Barrenechea and Ian Hayes, both from Boston, have been involved in several music projects together over the last 10 years (most notably, The Pillow Men), spanning a wide variety of genres. Noxaphonic is their latest endeavor, supplying live music for silent film at The Rockwell. For the
