Real Vocal String Quartet
Real Vocal String Quartet World Vocal Chamber Folk
A special two-day residency with San Francisco's eclectic string quartet. String quartet, string band, vocal quartet, jaw-dropping improvising world-music collective....pick a box and Real Vocal String Quartet will think outside it, with style. RVSQ plays original songs and unique arrangements that pay tribute to music from Appalachia to Kenya to Brazil, with sparkling improvisation that impresses and moves.
They will also teach a performance workshop as part of their residency.
Choose a box, any box, and the Real Vocal String Quartet will think outside of it. Theyre a string quartet and a vocal quartet. They play Irish fiddle tunes and Brazilian choro, chamber music and wild improvisation. They backed up Feist on her indie-pop hit Metals, which Jon Pareles of the New York Times named his favorite album of 2011, and appeared with her on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Rik Malone of KQED Arts has described their music as by turns beautiful, haunting, mesmerizing, and foot-stomping fun. The U.S. Department of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs recently sponsored the quartet on a tour to Eastern Europe as musical ambassadors for the American Music Abroad program. Their self-titled debut album is a marvelous accomplishment and a breathtaking bouquet with one luscious hybrid after another, according to KQEDs California Report, and their 2012 album, Four Little Sisters, is a wonderful blend, according to Acoustic Music.com, of Irish reel, Persian echoes, Appalachian down-homery, prog-ish rock and very generous slices of classical, neo-classical, and meta-classical improvisation set off by multi-layered vocal rondos, refrains, ritardando, and relish.
Violinist and vocalist Irene Sazer founded the group a decade ago. Some members have had babies, gone to graduate school for composition, and are doing all kinds of wonderful things in the world. Huge giant thanks to Alisa Rose, Jessica Ivry and Matthias McIntire for creative dedicated work. And now, we welcome Emily Onderdonk, Darcy Rindt and Vanessa Ruotolo to the ranks of Real Vocal. Seriously creative and accomplished musicians all, and wonderful people.
