King Arthur: A Collaboration
In what has been called "a 17th century Game of Thrones" by Leeds scholar Stephen Basdeo, Henry Purcell's sumptuous Baroque musical masque accompanying John Dryden's fantasy tale of enchantment, war, and liberation is celebrated still as one of the triumphs of English Restoration art and culture. Premiered in 1691 for the reigning monarchs William and Mary, the Poet's Theatre teams up with the musicians of the Henry Purcell Society of Boston and Arcadia Players period orchestra to present a rich baroque pageant of alternating dramatic scenes and ravishing music. The legendary King Arthur saves Britain from invading Saxons, as competing sorcerers and magicians battle, in our own presidential election month, for the soul and integrity of the nation!
