Get Cozy with the PSO: 'Brazilian Bach'
Get Cozy with the PSO!
Brazilian composer Villa Lobos Bachianas Brasilieras (translation: Bach in the style of Brazil) will be matched by Bachs Partita for solo flute. The nine Bachianas Brasileiras by Heitor Villa-Lobos are each written for a different set of instruments, and typically combine a movement with a Brazilian name and feel, followed by a movement inspired by the compositional patterns of Johann Sebastian Bach. Musical masters Mozart and Beethoven will round out the program.
This versatile program will feature an array of talented musicians including PSO principal flutist Brendan Ryan, Quintessence wind quintet, bassoonist Rick Shepard, a PSO string quartet among others.
Villa-Lobos is a household name in his native Rio de Janeiro, notes Virginia Macdonald, Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra Executive Director. Mainly self-taught, he spent years studying the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, and could be found nightly at bars across his city soaking in the music of his native Brazil. Eventually, these two pursuits blended together and became his Bachianas Brasileiras, a truly unique take on the master composer.
