Wisconsin Foodie, October Cheese Tour
Join us for our 2nd Wisconsin Foodie Cheese Tour!
Wisconsin Foodie is honored to have Jeanne Carpenter of Wisconsin Cheese Originals, lead all our Cheese Tours throughout the state! Jeanne is one of only four, Certified Cheese Professionals in Wisconsin!
Join us on Friday, October 21st, from Madison. We will spend the day visiting award winning, family owned, cheese factories! Along the way, Jeanne will share her passion and knowledge of the industry.
Tour details: Meet Jeanne bright and early at Metcalfe's Market - Hilldale. Grab a coffee from their cafe, and walk the floor of Metcalfe's Cheese department, where Jeanne is their Specialty Cheese Buyer!
From there, our group will set off via Lamers Bus to Shullsburg, Wisconsin and visit one of Wisconsin's most distinguished Master Cheesemakers, Chris Roelli and Roelli Cheese! Not only is Roelli Cheese is a Fourth Generation Family Cheese Haus, but they are the newly awarded winners for 2016 Best in Show, by the American Cheese Society, for their cheese, Little Mountain!
After, we will travel north to Mineral Point, and stop for a historic lunch at The Walker House. Carved into the same hillside rock from which mineral ore was first discovered and mined in the 1820s, the Walker House stands proud as one of the oldest, unique, and most beautiful buildings in the United States was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Our lunch includes their signature meal, the Cornish pasty (sometimes called "the miners' delight"), which originates from the miners in Cornwall, England; some of whom eventually made their way to Southwest Wisconsin during the mining boom in the 1800s. It is a regional favorite, and they have refined the original Cornish pasty into a delectable dish.
After lunch, we will tour another award winning Cheese factory, Hooks Cheese, where they age their cheese in curing caves at just the right temperature and humidity for a slow curing process that allows our cheese to age to perfection. Hooks is known for a variety of cow milk, sheep milk, and goat milk cheeses.
Last, but not least, we will conclude our day with our good friend Bob Wills and his team, at Cedar Grove Cheese (the sister factory of Milwaukee's Clock Shadow Creamery). Cedar Grove prides itself on making traditional and specialty cheeses which are rBGH- free & GMO-free! In December 1993, they lead the industry, by becoming the first in the country to assure its customers their products were free of Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH), which is a synthetic hormone used by some farmers to increase milk production.
We are expected to return to Hilldale, Madison near 5pm.
