From The People's Kitchen to the Motherland
**We have sold out** If you are still interested in tickets Contact Saqibkeval@gmail.com
From The People's Kitchen to the Motherland is a community meal project between the creators of The People's Kitchen, Word to Your Motherland and Betti Ono Gallery. Its a sunday evening family meal featuring a multi-course meal of indo-african foods that tell the story of the impacts of colonialism in the diets of the diaspora. We use food and recipes as a tool for storytelling and reclaiming community knowledge. Each course is curated to explore the history and effects of colonialism in the culinary traditions of indo-african communities and tell a narrative woven through each course and each of the art pieces presented by the artists of Word to Your Motherland. The evening will also feature performances by international bands and performance artists.
The meal will be shared collectively and be infused with dialogues and political education focused on building community and movement towards decolonizing our diets and deconstructing the neocolonial food system. This dinner will be a fundraiser for the the launch of the official monthly pop-up of The People's Kitchen in downtown oakland.
The People's Kitchen is a free community restaurant that couples political education and movement building with a high-end, local, organic meal that is lovingly prepared by community chefs. Each monthly People's Kitchen will raise money for a different local grassroots radical political project or program.
Tickets for this meal will be listed at $40 per person. We understand that this may prove a difficulty for some and our goal is to make this fundraiser as accessible as possible. We have a limited number sliding scale and work exchange tickets available, please contact Saqibkeval@gmail.com (with the subject line of "sliding scale tickets" for more information.)
The goal of The People's Kitchen is to not only fill our stomachs but also nourish our souls, feed our minds and fuel a movement.
