Common Thread's SummerFeast
(Roxbury, MA)Dudley Square's Common Thread Coalition is pleased to announce the final roster for the first annual Haley House SummerFeast, a Gospel Jamboree and Jerk Chicken Cook-off Contest to be held on Saturday, August 18 from 3PM-7PM in the Haley House Bakery Café parking lot at 12 Dade Street in Roxbury, MA. [The rain date is Sunday August 19 from 3-7PM.] SummerFeast is the first in the "Roxbury Night Lights" series of monthly, affordable, family-friendly events in Dudley Square presented by the Common Thread Coalition. Subsequent events will be scheduled to promote Dudley Square as an evening destination.
Our Gospel Jamboree will feature local artist Stanley Porter, talented singer, songwriter, and artist from Revere, MA. Besides writing and producing four albums, Porter has spent his time teaching in Boston Public Schools, keeping active in church ministry, hosting music television shows, and publishing a devotional memoir. A gifted singer, he has been nominated for Stellar and New England Urban Music Awards for his exceptional urban gospel style. Porter will be supported by Boston's own Adam Littlejohn, Jr. and several other local gospel artists. Brother Charles of Touch 106.1's TMS (The Morning Show) will preside as our Master of Ceremonies.
Eight local restaurants and chefs have accepted the challenge to compete in a jerk chicken contest, with event attendees and judges sampling their unique recipes. Participating restaurants include Country Kitchen; Haley House Bakery Café; Irie; Pepperpot; and Preparations. Other community chefs include local caterers Ethnica and Perry's; and solo chefs Shawn Jenkins, Audley Mills and Evereth Stephens. Haley House Bakery Café will round out the plate with delicious side dishes and summer punch. A jury of local dignitaries and culinar luminaries will judge the contenders' jerk chicken offerings, while event attendees vote for a People's Choice Award to select the most popular chef. The "Best Jerk Chicken" chosen by the distinguished panel of judges will receive an achievement award and an opportunity for community publicity. Confirmed Judges include: Felix Arroyo, Rose Arruda, Kalila Barnett, Kelley Chunn, Rep. Gloria Fox, Councilor Tito Jackson, Derek Lumpkins, Sibu Malaba, Darryl Settles, Joyce Stanley, Mary Tuitt, Darnell Williams, Nicola Williams, and Pat Williams.
