Come hear the new Young Professional Quartet in Residence at the University of Texas, invoke, accompanied by Texas State Faculty Pianist Faith DeBow in this program of music related to our favorite beer-bellied composer. Works will include the Brahms Piano Quintet, Peter Schickele's Piano Quintet #2 and original works by the invoke quartet.

invoke:
If the goal was to make classical music relevant, it couldn't have proven the point any more clearly. Bowed and fretted string quartet invoke continues to successfully dodge even the most valiant attempts at genre classification. The multi-instrumental bands other not-nots encompass traditions from across America, including bluegrass, Appalachian fiddle tunes, jazz, and minimalism. invoke weaves all of these traditions together to create truly unique contemporary string quartet repertoire, written by and for the group. Since its inception in 2013, invoke has been selected as Artists in Residence at Strathmore, the Young Professional String Quartet in Residence at the University of Texas at Austin, the Emerging Young Artist Quartet at Interlochen, and the Fellowship String Quartet at Wintergreen Performing Arts. In 2016, the band received First Prize in the Savvy Musician in ACTION Chamber Competition. invoke has shared the stage with some of the most acclaimed chamber groups in the country, including the Enso Quartet and the U.S. Army Field Band. Other highlights include a weeklong residency at the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Institutes, and appearances as part of the South Florida Symphonys Summer Chamber series and the NextNOW Festival at University of Maryland.
Pianist Faith DeBow first performed in concert in third grade with Czerny's "Song of the Star," and has enjoyed sharing music with audiences ever since - now across 15 states and 8 countries. Since she has performed for the astronauts of the International Space Station via video, you could also say that her playing has been heard "among the stars!" With a Great-Grandma Nina who was a composer and popular 1920s performer for silent movies, and many amateur musicians on her father's side of the family, music is in Faith's blood. Due to her father's military career, she grew up all around the US and overseas.
Faith teaches at Texas State University and Trinity University, helps lead the Victoria Bach Festival, and is the pianist for Conspirare, the Grammy-winning professional choir based in Austin. She occasionally plays with the Austin and Victoria symphony orchestras. She has recorded multiple CDs for Harmonia Mundi and PBS with Conspirare, and for Albany Records with tuba player Tim Buzbee.
She is also a singer and enjoys sharing that at her church, retreat centers, and for occasional benefit concerts. Faith earned degrees in piano performance from Butler University, where she was a Division I competitive swimmer, and in accompanying and chamber music from the Eastman School of Music.
You may notice that Faith is reading her music from an iPad. She uses an app called ForScore, which allows you to make notations on the score just like paper music. She turns the pages with her left foot using a Bluetooth wireless pedal. Faith has many interests including hiking, photography, the country of Iceland, being an aunt to 3 adorable nieces, competing in triathlons, and Butler Bulldogs basketball. She practices at home on a 1915 Chickering grand, with her Australian shepherd Sophie listening nearby.
