75 years ago, in 1941, Guthrie wrote 26 songs about the Columbia River dam projects for the Bonneville Power Administration. The first to ever include all 26 songs that Woody Guthrie turned in to the Bonneville Power Administration in 1941. These concerts will raise funds to cover production expenses and help promote the forthcoming release!
The new project, Roll Columbia, will include artists from across the Northwest including David Grisman, John Moen of the Decembrists and Peter Buck of R.E.M. The project was produced in tandem with Seattle author Greg Vandy, who wrote the new book26 Songsin 30 Days while consulting both Joe Seamons and Bill Murlin to learn about the years they have spent researching Guthries songs.
The October 22nd concert will be the largest in a region-wide concert series that has taken place throughout the region this year to commemorate the 75th anniversary of songs that have helped define the Pacific Northwest.
The Roll Columbia album project is a non-profit endeavor sponsored by by the Rhapsody Project and The Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission. Tax-deductible donations to the recording project can be made by visitinghttp://www.ochcom.org/SupportRollColumbia.html Woody Sez I hate a song that makes you think that youre not any good. I hate a song that makes you think that you are just born to lose. Bound to lose. No good to nobody. No good for nothing. Because you are either too old or too young or too fat or too slim or too ugly or too this to too that Songs that run you down or songs that poke fun of you on account of your bad luck or you hard traveling. I am out to fight those kinds of songs to my very last breath of air and my last drop of blood.
Woody is just Woody. Thousands of people do not know he has any other name. He is just a voice and a guitar. He sings the songs of a people and I suspect that he is, in a way, that people. Harsh voiced and nasal, his guitar hanging like a tire iron on a rusty rim, there is nothing sweet about Woody, and there is nothing sweet about the songs he sings. But there is something more important for those who still listen. There is the will of a people to endure and fight against oppression. I think we call this the American spirit.
