The 9th ANNUAL Boston SOUPER BOWL
[There are four entry times for this event -  2pm and 3pm are SOLD OUT - please note that you must scroll down to see the various entry times when purchasing tickets - this event usually sells out for all time slots]

On Sunday, February 12th, from 2-6 PM at Haley House Bakery Café in Roxbury's Dudley Square, more than a dozen chefs will serve soups made from locally sourced ingredients as a fundraiser for Haley House's Soup Kitchen in the South End.

Upon entering, attendees will select a handcrafted ceramic bowl, courtesy of MassArt's Clay for Change student group. They will then make their way from station to station, sampling delicious soups produced with locally sourced ingredients. In sampling a variety of these soups, people realize that with a little creativity, folks can eat locally all year round. At the end of the event, the attendees are invited to take their handmade bowls home with them.

In 2009, the Boston Localvores, an informal group interested in supporting the local food movement, approached Haley House Bakery Café with the concept of a tasting event spotlighting locally sourced soups and "A Souper Bowl" was born. Six years ago, MassArt's Clay for Change student organization proposed a partnership to make bowls for this event, to help support Haley House's 50 year old Soup Kitchen (located in the South End since 1966). For the past several years MassArt's Center for Art and Community Partnerships has collaborated by coordinating community bowl making workshops that add to the richness of the event.

Ingredients for the Souper Bowl are sourced from a selection of local farms and purveyors. Iggy's Breads generously donates bread for this occasion. Soups featured in past Souper Bowls include: Butternut Squash & Apple, Cream of Carrot, French Onion, Kambocha Mash, Kale, Pea Tendril, Pork & Bean, Root Vegetable & Lentil, Scotch Broth, Seafood Chowder and Sweet & Spicy Parsnip.

About the Souper Bowl Partners:

Haley House Soup Kitchen
Located at 23 Dartmouth Street in the South End since 1966, Haley House's Soup Kitchen builds community and relationships every week by preparing a nutritious, made-from scratch breakfast for men struggling with homelessness (Sunday-Friday), a sit-down lunch for neighborhood elders living on limited incomes (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays) and a weekly food pantry. The home-cooked, nutritious meals are prepared by volunteers and led by members of a community living upstairs; no one has ever been paid to serve in the soup kitchen. There are no metal detectors or law enforcement officers present, and guests are treated with dignity and care and given refuge from the violence and anonymity of the streets. The personalist focus of the Soup Kitchen offers a broader perspective on the systems that create hunger and poverty, while working to build alternatives to those systems. Donations from the Souper Bowl 9 will support three months of food served in the soup kitchen.

Massachusetts College of Art and Design
Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) founded in 1873, has a legacy of leadership as the only independent public college of art and design in the country and the nation's first art school to grant a degree. MassArt is dedicated to authentic and mutually beneficial community engagement through public programming, curricular opportunities, and collaborations like Haley House's Souper Bowl. MassArt's artists and designers are committed to making a difference in their local communities and around the world.

Center for Art and Community Partnerships (CACP)
The Center for Art and Community Partnerships (CACP) at MassArt believes that art and design are dynamic, transformative, tools in building a nurturing community. CACP embraces inclusive, collaborative, approaches to create artful opportunities in which the college community and the wider public create and learn with one another. For the past several years CACP has deepened and extended the Souper Bowl collaboration between Haley House and MassArt to include ceramics workshops and this year, a cooking class at Haley House! These "skill share" workshops bring CACP staff, Clay for Change students, Ceramics faculty and members of the Haley House community together to create and glaze ceramic bowls at MassArt and then cook and eat together at the Haley House instructional kitchen. These workshops allow members of the Haley House community and members of the MassArt community to build awareness, connections and new creative skills!

Clay for Change
Clay for Change is a student organization at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The organization works to build strong connections between MassArt and the wider community through the arts and ceramics in particular. "Empty Bowls" is one of Clay for Change's primary initiatives.

About Empty Bowls:
Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. The basic premise is simple: handcrafted ceramic bowls are created, guests are invited to enjoy soup within the bowl and for a cash donation they keep the bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity - in this case, Haley House.

Haley House Celebrates 50 years!
In 2016, Haley House celebrated fifty years of working for social change. Since 1966, Haley House has used food and the power of community to break down barriers between people, revitalize neighborhoods and challenge the status quo. Haley House's mission is to foster health, hope, and economic independence while challenging the root causes of poverty and injustice. Over the course of our 50-year history, Haley House has expanded creatively in response to the needs of those who have come to our doors. Despite our growth, Haley House maintains an intimate sense of community that inspires and supports personal and societal change. We remain deeply rooted in our two Boston neighborhoods: the South End (since 1966) and Roxbury (since 2005).
