A Line Becomes A Circle
Circuit Network is proud to present the world premiere of Miya Masaokas new 50-minute chamber opera based on haikus written by her distant relative, Masaoka Shiki. A Line Becomes A Circle features influences of Buddhist chanting combined with contemporary modalities and electronics. Shomyo singer Makiko Sakurai is flying from Japan for the production, and performs with operatic soprano Ann Moss, percussionist Joel Davel and the composer, who recently returned from Japan researching Shomyo and Noh music with the support of a Fulbright Fellowship. These premiere performances at Theatre of Yugen will be closely followed by the presentation of excerpts of the piece at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Philadelphia, PA.
