Music That Elevates the Soul: Black Cedar Trio Music by J.S. Bach, Durwynne Hsieh, Toru Takemitsu, Haydn, and more
Saturday, November 19, 7:30 pm Sunday, November 20, 3:00 pm
Kris Palmer, Concert director and flute Isaac Pastor-Chermak, cello; Steve Lin, Guitar
As a rare ensemble dedicated to music for flute, cello, and guitar, Black Cedar creates, discovers, and re-imagines works for this innovative, remarkable combination. Flutist Kris Palmer, guitarist Steve Lin, and cellist Isaac Pastor-Chermak release their debut album in May 2016, and this trio is the winner of awards from the Zellerbach Family Foundation, the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, and the National Flute Association.
In this concert, Black Cedar shows its wide range of repertoire and styles with a program that spans Renaissance folk music, a trio sonata by Bach, one of their own recent commissions by Bay Area composer Durwynne Hsieh, folk music from China and Appalachia, 20th-century music inspired by Greenpeaces Save the Whales campaign, and a tango from Argentina.
The San Francisco Examiner writes, Black Cedar has done a wonderful job of making the case that chamber music can involve approaches to instrumentation not usually expected.
