JESSICA KONDRATH | THE MOVEMENT (Los Angeles) and Weslie Ching Dance (Santa Barbara) present new works at ARC Pasadena Saturday, September 24th @ 8pm and Sunday, September 25th at 2pm.
Kondrath presents a triptych of work based on Brian Eno's card deck, Oblique Strategies (Over One Hundred Worthwhile Dilemmas):
In total darkness, or in a very large room, very quietly is a solo created utilizing Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies deck by using each card's directive as an impetus for movement invention and improvisation. Dancer Kristin Deiss and I choreographed this work from the material generated in the studio under these directives.
Infinitesimal Gradations is a group work that explores the space within light and movement. Playing with the possibilities between light and darkness, motion and stillness; this dance uses light to manipulate the environment in which the dancers can traverse as well as how much the audience is able to see their bodies in space. Considering that there is an infinite spectrum in which to play, the dancers move with varying speeds through a space where the light is ever changing.
Feed the Material Back Out of the Machine is a trio which was created through the deconstruction of previous dance works by Kondrath, specifically utilizing the card prompts "What mistakes did you make last time?", "Remove the middle, extend the edges", and "What are the sections sections of? Imagine a caterpillar moving".
JKTM Dancers include: Kristin Deiss, Charlie Diaz, Kimberley Hannah, Heather Hightower, Kevin Lopez, and Briana Masson.
Ching will premiere The Entirety Of Us, a quintet inspired by the color and vibrancy of the prismatic spectrum in relationship to individuality and group dynamics. Her other two works-- We are Made of Stars and You (or Someone Like You)-- evolved from Ching's interest in the intersection of physical and metaphysical cosmologies. Performing with Weslie Ching Dance are Shelby Lynn Joyce, Natalia Perea, Nikki Pfeiffer, Nicole Powell and Lauren Serrano.
