Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents The Corey Kendrick Trio
This Friday! If you getDOWNBEAT, check out page 28 of October's issue (which just came out)... The trio's new CD, "Rootless" has a featured review by John Ephland.
Touring from Michigan in celebration of their new CD, "Rootless",The Corey Kendrick Trio, featuring Corey on piano, Nick Bracewell on drums, and Joe Vasquez on bass, combines the infectious swing of the Oscar Peterson trio and the intricate interaction of the Bill Evans trio with a modern harmonic sensibility to create a truly dynamic group sound.
Established while studying under Rodney Whitaker at Michigan State University, the Corey Kendrick Trio has developed their melody-driven, straight ahead sound over two and a half years of extensive performing. On their debut recording, "Rootless," the Trio delves into the themes of life in transition and all the associated emotions, whilst exploring the sonic tapestry of the piano trio. From the anxiety of starting anew, to the loneliness of an unfamiliar home, to the pure joy of new friends and experiences, to the indescribable emotions of new parenthood, Rootless runs the gamut both in terms of emotional content and stylistic possibilities.

06/30/16 Albums By Travis Rogers The Corey Kendrick Trio is Anything but "Rootless"
"Firm Footing and Wide-eyed Imagination.I love debut albums. They are full of promise and hope. We sit back and wonder where this or that artist has been all our lives. And we cant wait to hear how the artist will evolve by the next album. 'Rootless' by The Corey Kendrick Trio is full to the brim of all those thoughts and feelings.
Corey Kendrick is a brilliant young pianist and composer. He wrote all but three tracks on the album. His sense of harmony and melody is something innovative with not only a little adventurousness and dare I say bravado. Joining him in his trio are Joe Vasquez on bass and Nick Bracewell on drums, both of whom can groove with the old guard and without guilt. Together, this trio brings the grace and the fire."
