Sound Bites: Moxie
A collaboration between the Salt Institute for Documentary studies at MECA, The Corner storytelling series in Lewiston, and Frontier, Sound Bites is a new kind of storytelling series. With a dedicated theme tying each installment together, the night will feature regional Moth StorySlam Champions, locals sharing true tales, and audio and media pulled from the 43 years of Maine history in the Salt Archives. The fifth installment, Moxie, will feature the talents of Susan McCray, a nationally recognized humanities teacher from Casco Bay High School; Bee, a beekeeper, writer and passionate Maine-based storyteller; Robert Freson, world photographer of Look, Esquire, and National Geographic, among many others; Nick Schroeder, Dispatch Magazine editor; and seven time Moth StorySlam winner, Sandi Marx.
Susan McCray has been a teacher for more than 20 years and currently teaches Humanities at Portland Maines Expeditionary Learning School, Casco Bay High School. She is the first ever recipient (2013) of the national Klingenstein Award for Teaching Excellence in Expeditionary Learning.
Bee began telling stories as a means to get out of trouble when she was a kid. It worked most of the time so she eventually earned an MFA in creative writing. Shes published a book on honey bees, has been in various literary small press magazines, and was featured on NPRs This I Believe. She won the 2016 story slam at the League of Advancement of New England Storytellers (LANES) and was a third place winner at the Corners story slam in 2015. She is currently putting the finishing touches on a memoir while farming and beekeeping in Jefferson, Maine.
Robert Freson has photographed President Dwight D. Eisenhower, surrealist painter Salvador Dali and actress Sophia Loren, to name a very select few. His photos have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Vogue and National Geographic, among other publications, in nearly 80 countries. At 89, Robert Freson, the Belgium-born photojournalist is living on Bailey Island on the coast of Maine.
Nick Schroeder was born in and raised in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, where as a teenager -- in addition to playing in a series of hardcore punk bands with increasingly obnoxious and antisocial names -- he published a print zine called Alive With Pleasure, which had tens of readers in Southern Maine in the late '90s. Today, he lives in Portland and is the editor of Dispatch, a monthly arts and culture magazine, and is an actor and director with the Portland theater companies Lorem Ipsum and Mad Horse. He won a spelling bee in 2015 (by spelling the word staphylococcus backward), and has lost three bathing suits this summer.
Sandi Marx has been busy telling stories all over the country for the past three years. A seven time Moth StorySlam winner, nothing is too personal or excruciating to be left untold. She can be heard on several podcasts such as RISK, SOUNDTRACK SERIES, THE WHOLE STORY, YUM'S THE WORD and countless others. "You'll be Sorry" her solo show has just had an encore presentation at the TANK in NYC. Sandi is a retired talent agent and mother of three grown children,so there's lots of material.
Sound Bites is made possible by generous contributions from Allagash Brewing Company and Toad & Co.
