Meet "Shanti House"- Warm Homes for Youth at Risk and in Danger
Join us to hear the story of Shanti House. Shanti House, which first opened its doors to youth in 1984, serves as a temporary home as well as a long-term framework for runaway and street youth ages 14-21, regardless of religion, race, sex or gender. Shanti House takes in youth who are in immediate danger or are on the brink of becoming victims of physical violence, sexual abuse, crime, prostitution and the like. Also, Shanti House has prevention programs for at-risk youth throughout the country. The Shanti House Association runs two homes: the Neve Tzedek Shanti House in Tel Aviv (link) and the Desert Shanti House Youth Village (link), located on the road between Beer Sheva and Mitzpe Ramon, some 5 kilometers from Sde Boker. The Shanti House team has developed a model, one which can be assimilated in any country seeking a solution for at-risk youth. Visit the Shanti House Website : http://shanti.org.il/en/
Come and meet the people behind the story:
Mariouma Ben Yosef, Shanti House Founder and director since 1984:
I have lived the lives of the youth that come to us, I am intimately familiar with their lives from my own experiences, not through academic or literary studies. I grew into the Shanti House way, I succeeded in changing my destiny, and I try to give the youth tools to change their destinies. What I have done for many years was based on an instinctive understanding, with the oral tradition evolving from one youth to the other. I tried to put it into writing in the chapters of the Shanti House book so that the know-how will not fade away or disappear, even after I finish my job and my part in this world. From Mariumas book The Shanti House Way Deke Mizri, age 21, has been at Shanti House since he was 15.5 years old. He joined The Israeli army and recently graduated an officer from the highly regarded officers course in the Israeli Army( FIDF).
Shaili Telker, age 30. He came to shanti house when he was 16. He decided to join the Shanti house staff as a coordinator:" I would like to assist teenagers, like me"
