Sound the trumpets! We kick off our second season as Commonwealth Chorale with three glorious works for chorus and brass ensemble. Belgian composer Joseph Jongens sumptuous Messe en lhonneur du Saint-Sacrement interlaces counterpoint, lush harmonies, and plainsong melodies for chorus with brass and organ accompaniment evoking Gabrieli. We also feature works by two Commonwealth Composers. Patricia Van Nesss Nocturnes, which we commissioned in 2000, invites us to explore the night, weaving ethereal Latin chants that draw upon elements of medieval and Renaissance music. And Daniel Pinkham fuses early music and contemporary styles in his festive Christmas Cantata, an audience favorite since its debut in 1957.
This concert is sponsored by a generous gift from Timothy and Jane Gillette.
