Dark Divas - Benefitting the YWCA
Nu Black Arts West Theatre, the producing company, came back to life from its previous incarnation as Black Arts West Theatre, a Seattle company started in the 1960s. MoniƩ was on staff from 1975 to 1980, and after a hiatus, she brought the company back in 1995 as Nu Black Arts West Theatre. "We're celebrating our 20th year of being back on the block."
This production talks about icons Ella Fitzgerald, PearlBailey, Jackie "Moms" Mabley, Dinah Washington, Bessie Smith, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Earhta Kit, and Etta James and the people they were. When and where they were born and what influenced them as entertainers. We'll explore the lives of these ladies, not only the downs but the ups. We invite you to come with us, we're going to take you through the music, the magic and motions of Dark Divas."
The first half of the show is set at the Apollo Theater and the second half at the Cotton Club. Those two legendary Harlem venues launched the careers of the women in the show.
