Selections from Pirate of Penzance Midwest Cornish Festival Saturday, September 24th
Join Pilot Opera for a rowdy concert of Gilbert and Sullivan's swashbuckling operetta, The Pirates of Penzance on Saturday, September 24th at 7PM at the Mineral Point Opera House. This event is part of the 24th annual Midwest Cornish Festival in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. More information about the Festival can be found at http://www.cornishfest.org/. Tickets are $15.00 for adults and $12.00 for children.
The faithful Frederic, having celebrated his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. The plot thickens when Frederic learns that his indenture to the pirates specifies apprenticeship until his "twenty-first birthday". The fact comes to light, however, that he was born on the 29th of February, and thus, technically, he only has a birthday once every four years. This means that he must serve for another 63 years, which presents difficulty to the happy couple. Pilot Opera's adaptation brings together the key characters - Frederic, his sweetheart Mabel, her story-telling father the Major General, the robust Pirate King, and Frederic's well-meaning nursemaid, Ruth - to tell this complicated tale.
