Biology & the Story of Life (NGSS Connections)
Learn how to weave biology units into the story of Life using student designed models and inquiry based labs to teach NGSS with little $$$.
With NGSS on the horizon, the traditional school biology landscape is changing. The model of lecture-and-recipe labs are evolving into the tilted/flipped instruction model and inquiry-based learning. This movement positions the teacher as the storyteller, weaving seemingly disconnected units of biology of the greatest story ever told: The Story of Life.
Most biology textbooks start with chemistry progress to cells, but seemingly disjointed topics can be seamlessly integrated. Participants will engage in simple, effective activities that present the properties of water, its movement through osmosis and diffusion in a format tailored to students inquisitive nature.
Explore cell and protein structures by developing models using household objects. Challenge students understanding of protein structure with interactive labs using fluorescent proteins and varying concentrations of pH, salinity, and temperature. Quantify with free software by plotting and analyzing results.
The blueprints for protein production are so important, its hidden safe in the nucleus. Participants will receive instructions on how to make take-home DNA models using beads. By building, students have a deeper understanding of how the structure of DNA codes for different proteins.
Participants employ biotechnology to reveal how differences in DNA can help identify individuals. Information on free resources for promoting biotechnology provided.
Workshop will be held at the R.H. Fleet Science Center. Community Forum Space (please enter through the Business Entrance) When: Saturday, October 22nd from 9:30 - 11:30 AM Address: 1875 El Prado Balboa Park San Diego, CA 92101 (619) 238-1233
