Jan Krist Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Curious
Twenty years ago Jan Krist released an album that brought her much deserved national acclaim and attention. The 1996 release Curious would prove to be some of her best work. Shell celebrate the anniversary of the album with an October 1 concert at Trinity House Theatre.
Her then record label, Silent Planet, invested quite a bit of money to pair her with noted producers Jim Dickinson and Newton Carter. As a producer Dickinson worked with legendary artists like Big Star, the Replacements, Green on Red and Toots and the Maytals. He also performed as a musician with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Ry Cooder among many others.
The producers were able to bring together a backing band that brought increasing depth and passion to her music. Musical guests included Randall Bramblett and Pierce Pettis. Billboard praised the album and noted that she was backed by a band that cooks. They also said her talents as a songwriter equals if not surpasses her vocal gifts.
Former Billboard writer Robert Darden is now a Professor of Journalism, Public Relations and New Media at Baylor. He recently reflected on Curious and wrote, Twenty years ago, we had people named Clinton and Bush vying for the highest office in the land, we had war and rumors of wars in the Middle East, we had a deeply divided nation and we had Jan Krist making sense of it all in Curious. Twenty years later, Curious still makes sense. And it is still great music. It is one of the few CDs (and yes, I still listen on CD) from my days with Billboard magazine that I listen to regularly. It is timeless. It is magical. It is musical. Its a classic. Ive given away numerous copies of all of Jans CDs through the years. Her music still matters. Her lyrics still illuminate. I used to share Curious with friends with a slight sense of superiority for having discovered her first. As Ive gotten older, I now share Curious with a deep sense of humility, coupled with just a little awe of her talent. This is something special. Sharing it is the least I can do.
Jans longtime guitarist Jim Bizer will perform in her band for the night and will open the show. He will perform some music from his CD Closer to the Surface which is celebrating its 15th Anniversary.
