In order to gain a sense of the far ranging aesthetic possibilities for our narrative crafting, we will read excerpts from 5 memoirs, each followed by imitation exercises using the material from our own lives. Our exploration will span the newest formats to the oldest : Facebook to philosophy, while passing through the graphic comic strip, mixed-genre essay, and journal. Authors studied will include Sherman Alexie, Eula Biss, Matias Viegener, James Maskalyk, and J.M. Coetzee.
