"Our Country's Good" PREVIEW
"Our Country's Good" by Timberlake Wertenbaker
Based on Thomas Keneally's novel "The Playmaker"

Winner of the Olivier Award for Best Play, the BBC Award for West End Play of the Year, and the New York Drama Critics' Award for Best Foreign Play

Directed by Steve Wargo

Australia, 1789; the founding of the Botany Bay penal colony:
humans in chains, Royal Marines with whips and nooses, strange birds and kangaroos, and a prescient, observant Aborigine create an arid, brutal alien landscape where no one can be expected to thrive.
And yet: Lieutenant Ralph Clark is tasked with putting on the first play in the continent's history with a cast of mostly-illiterate, completely desperate convicts.  What ensues is an intense, lyrical, full-throated testimonial to the very nature of the theatre as a humaizing force, a spiritual locus, and as necessary to life as bread, water, and freedom.
