Australia, 1789; the founding of the Botany Bay penal colony: humans in chains, Royal Marines with whips and nooses, strange birds and kangaroos, and a prescient, observant Aborigine create an arid, brutal alien landscape where no one can be expected to thrive. And yet: Lieutenant Ralph Clark is tasked with putting on the first play in the continent's history with a cast of mostly-illiterate, completely desperate convicts. What ensues is an intense, lyrical, full-throated testimonial to the very nature of the theatre as a humaizing force, a spiritual locus, and as necessary to life as bread, water, and freedom.
