Dames Who Read "In Winter's Kitchen"
In Winters Kitchen by Beth Dooley. Growing Roots and Breaking bread in the Northern Heartland: A portrait of the people, farmers, artisans, chefs and restaurateurs who are building a vibrant food movement in the northern heartland.
Each chapter features an ode to one of the key foods of the upper Midwest wild rice, apples, cheese and butter, sweet potatoes and chestnuts all get their due. It is a beautifully written book about the world of food production in the Midwest and a celebration of our fall and winter foodstuffs. Bring along your favorite quote for discussion.
It is generally acknowledged that things grown within 250 miles of the table are considered local --but how about 40 feet ! Thats where much of our dinner will originate when we visit the rooftop garden at UNCOMMON GROUND, and the first Certified Organic Roof Top Farm in the US as well as their own brewery, GREENSTAR BREWING, the First Certified Organic Brewery in Illinois. Well see where our dinners ingredients were grown and processed, then walk downstairs to enjoy our discussion and enjoy the meal.
