Jazz Great Kendra Shank with Draa Hobbs and band
Long time regional guitarist Draa Hobbs has put together a stellar group to accompany premiere jazz vocalist Kendra Shank, including special guest Rich Greenblatt from Bostons acclaimed Berklee College of Music; bassist Wayne Roberts; and drummer Claire Arenius.
Guitarist Hobbs has been active throughout New England for many years, performing with a wide variety of regional and Internationally recognized musicians including saxophonist Jed Levy, vocalist Kevin Mahogany, guitarists John Stowell, Vic Juris, Attila Zoller, Peter Bernstein, and pianist Don Friedman. He appears on a number of CDs, including most recently a track for the German label Enja, "Message To Attila", a tribute to his former mentor, Attila Zoller.
Kendra Shank's crystal-pure tone, powerful musicianship and elastic phrasing have won her rave critical notices and fans internationally. Hailed by The New York Times as a "superbly skilled vocalist" and an artist of "effervescence, depth," and "integrity" (Nate Chinen), she headlines at top venues across the U.S. and abroad, captivating audiences with her genuine warmth and musicality. Shank combines jazz originals, standards, world music, French songs, folk/pop tunes, and open improvisation in an adventurous, genre-bending style that inspired Gary Giddins to call her "one of New York's most original performers." Rich has played in jazz and blues festivals in the U.S. and Europe and recorded with The Be-Bop Guitars, The Jazz Composers' Alliance, and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. Over the years he has played with such great artists as Kurt Elling, Billy Mitchell, Kevin Hayes, Valery Ponamarev, Bill Charlap, Greg Hutchinson, Dennis Irwin, Winard Harper, Joe Hunt, Teddy Charles and Oscar Castro-Neves.
Juilliard trained acoustic bassist Wayne Roberts has been a mainstay on the New York Jazz scene for many years. Among the most notable musicians Wayne has worked with are Kirk Lightsey, Hal Galper, Howard Alden, Vic Juris, Jack Wilkins, Joe Cohn, Ken Peplowski, Walt Weiskopf, Dave Liebman, Bill Mays, Harry Allen, Warren Vache, John Beasley, Billy Childs, Atilla Zoller, Chuck Wayne and Jaki Byard.
Drummer/composer/educator Claire Arenius has been performing in jazz and improvisational music for more than thirty years. She has performed and/or recorded with many jazz greats including: Tal Farlow, Slide Hampton, Richard Davis, Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, Karrin Allyson, Charles Neville, George Mraz, Ray Copeland, Mose Allison, Barney Kessel, Yusef Lateef, Rufus Reid, Lew Soloff, Sheila Jordan and more.
