Delbert Anderson Trio, Featuring Def-i
Native American Jazz ~

Formed in the deserts of the Southwest United States - DAT is a cutting edge jazz trio that combines modern funk and jazz with ancient indigenous melodies.  The Delbert Anderson Trio and Def-i fuse hip hop and jam/funk to create the sounds of the Southwest.

The Delbert Anderson jazz trio (plus Def-i ) returns with its unique groove to Willits Community Theatre on Sunday, September 18 at 2pm. The Native American threesome thrilled its audience last year at WCT and reappears with Navajo horn player Delbert Anderson, Mike McCluhan on stand-up bass and drummer Nicholas Lucero. The group was formed in the deserts of the Southwest, and has performed at concerts throughout the United States. The trio counts as its influences many greats from the jazz world. The three jazzmen serve up a spectacular cutting edge form of modern funk and jazz combined with ancient indigenous melodies. Their first live album Manitou was released in March 2015 and includes the songs "Groove Warrior", "New York Navajo" and signature tracks like "Iron Horse Gallup".
Anderson began his jazz studies at Eastern New Mexico University, where he apprenticed with saxophonist Christopher Beaty and trumpeter John Kennedy. He found further influences in Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Sonny Rollins and Joshua Redman. Anderson says of his playing jazz, "We need to keep this true American art form alive." McCluhan has a long career playing bass with many other jazz artists. He draws heavily from a variety of musical influences, from The Grateful Dead to Charlie Mingus. The bassist is known for his versatility at playing a variety of musical forms and providing a lot of the groove for the trio. Lucero on drums was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and has played music since the age of five. After experimenting with saxophone, piano and marimba, Lucero found his true calling in drums. His primary influences have included Chick Corea and John Coltrane and he has performed widely across the United States and parts of Europe. The appearance of this jazz trio at WCT promises to be a very special event.
Advance tickets are $15 and available in person at Mazahar, 38 S. Main St., Willits; online at brownpapertickets.com; or by phone 24/7 at 1-800-838-3006. Tickets will also available at the door until sold out. The WCT playhouse is located at 37 W. Van Lane (behind Shanachie Pub).

Message from the group:

"Something new and fun from Delbert Anderson Trio:

#DDAT 2016 - We thought why not keep pushing the envelope and pushing musical boundaries. Who is to say what "jazz" is and where the lines between musical forms like Hip Hop and Jazz begin and end.

So we found another artist with tons of great forward momentum - someone we enjoy listening to - someone that we like hanging with and thought - why not MAKE some music with him.

For 2016 - we're proud to announce a collaboration with Def-i (Christopher Mike-Bidtah).

Def-i is a very talented hip hop artists based in the Southwest as well - he's recently released an album called "Shields for Raining Arrows" that you have to hear to get a feel for his smooth, intelligent and rhythmic style.

Please welcome Def-i to the DAT Family and keep an eye for what we have coming up!!"
