Celebrate Teatro Paraguas!
Please join us for our annual gala fundraiser celebration Celebrate Teatro Paraguas! Saturday, August 27 from 6-9 pm at a private Santa Fe residence. We will provide food, drink, and festivities which include a preview of our 2016-17 season. More information and registration for the event can be found at Teatro Paraguas Celebration 2016.
We have a lot to celebrate this year at Teatro Paraguas. We have continued our tradition as a performing arts hub on Santa Fe's south side, hosting over 150 events in 2015-2016. We kicked off our regular season last year with the world premier of the lovely Our Lady of Mariposas by Santa Fe playwright Alix Hudson; we plummeted into the depths of place and immigration in Quiara Alegría Hudes' magical Yemaya's Belly; we explored the human stories behind the timely themes of immigration and Islam in America in Mike Batistick's powerful Port Authority Throwdown; we produced Kristoffer Díaz's exciting hip-hop theater play Welcome to Arroyo's, which featured a collaboration with local muralist Sebastian "Vela" Velázquez.
In addition to our main stage productions, Teatro Paraguas Children's Theater produced Coyote the Trickster, Snow White and the Seven Conservationists, and did a spring tour of the Santa Fe Public Libraries performing cuentos (New Mexican folk tales) for children. We also launched the Teatro Paraguas teen acting class. With Santa Fe Dance Works, we continued our annual Día de los Muertos and A Musical Piñata for Christmas seasonal community celebrations. We supported our local poetry community with open mic events, book launches, and readings. We hosted sold out flamenco performances by Compañía Chuscales y Mina Fajardo. We also welcomed New Mexico Actors Lab into Teatro Paraguas for their successful summer season. We've been a busy theater!
Our next season, recently selected and deliciously written, will feature three unique voices of contemporary American theatre: a local woman, a Chicago-based Latina, and a recent Pulitzer Prize winner from New York. We begin with the story of a trans man, inspired by a historical figure from the Mexican Revolution; we continue with a fun romp through infidelity, revenge, and curanderismo (Mexican folk healing); and we conclude with a gritty comedy about addiction and recovery. We will reprise our ¡Poesía Viva! series by honoring a beloved New Mexican poet and hosting a reading by two Cuban poets, recently translated into English for the first time. We will continue our children and teen programs and our community and poetry events. An exciting addition this year will be Gotitas (raindrops), our children's program for kids in kindergarten through second grade.
With all of the good work Teatro Paraguas has done and continues to do, we need to update and expand our space. We cannot do this without your support. We have already started, purchasing LED lights for our stage and brand new comfy chairs for our patrons. This year we plan to acquire a new rehearsal and performance space and to upgrade our heating and cooling system. Our fund raising goal to support these efforts is $12,000. We need your help to meet or beat that goal. Please join us for the gala on August 27th and show your support!
At the gala, we will announce and preview our upcoming season. The gala will feature live music by Mélange and Yves Lucero & Lena Stavely. We will be serving a traditional New Mexican dinner along with beer provided by Duel Brewery, and wine provided by our gracious hostess. Be a part of the celebration for $75 per person or bring a friend and pay only $110 per couple. It is an opportunity to come together and celebrate all of us: the actors, poets, dancers, musicians, audience, and supporters that make Teatro Paraguas a rich center of diversity and creativity.
If you can't attend the gala, please consider making a donation. We are always grateful for any amount you are willing to contribute to support our mission.
Thank you for your time; We hope to see you at the gala on August 27th. Again, for more information or to donate, please visit the event page on our website, Teatro Paraguas Celebration 2016.
With gratitude,
Argos MacCallum Executive Director, Teatro Paraguas
