Golden State/Lone Star is named from the home states of its iconic musician members, three from California and two from Texas. The group features Grammy-nominated harp blower/vocalist/bandleader Mark Hummel, with guitar legends Anson Funderburgh and Little Charlie Baty, plus drummer Wes Starr and bassist RW Grigsby. Baty, longtime known with Little Charlie and The Nightcats, says, "it's all about 5 guys who have been playing music all their lives, and each night play with the excitement and energy of their first gig!"
The group's self-titled debut album was released in April, introducing what has been called "one of the most accomplished and enjoyable ensembles playing the Real Deal Blues today" (Dick Shurman). Living Blues Magazine calls the album "a stunning piece of work from start to finish".
Mark Hummel started playing harmonica in 1970 and has become one of the premier blues harmonica players of his generation. He started his first band, The Blues Survivors, in 1977, has toured with blues legends Charles Brown, Charlie Musselwhite, and Jimmy Rogers, among many others. He began the now international Blues Harmonica Blowout Series in 1991 which has included scores of famous blues performers over the years and tours throughout the country annually.
Funderburgh formed Anson and the Rockets in 1978, went on to capture numerous Blues Music Awards, has performed with the likes of Boz Scaggs, Delbert McClinton, Earl King, and more. He is described as coming closer than any guitar player today to achieving the classic Stratocaster tone of the 50s and 60s". (Guitar Player Magazine)
Baty formed LIttle Charlie & The Nightcats (named after LIttle Walter's backing band) in the early 70s and ran the band with Rick Estrin for 32 years. He moved on from The Nightcats in 2008, leaving it in Estrin's capable hands, and soon after joined with Hummel on Blues Survivors gigs and Blues Harp Blowouts. "Little Charlie Baty plays as much guitar as Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy put together," raves The Village Voice. "He is one of the swiftest, most fluent guitarists working in any genre". (Guitar World)
Rounding out the lineup are RW Grigsby on bass and Austin drummer Wes Starr, who have between them played with a who's who of famed blues musicians.
This show is an absolute must for any true blues lover in the Treasure Valley, and is sure to sell out quickly.
