About the films:

Sept. 20  Animal Crackers, 1930
Starring: The Marx Brothers, Margaret Dumont
In this outing, Groucho plays the infamous Captain Jeffrey Spaulding, African explorer, the guest of honour at a Long Island party (accompanied by Zeppo as his field secretary, Horatio Jamison) being given by Mrs. Rittenhouse (Margaret Dumont). Roscoe W. Chandler (Louis Sorin) is displaying a painting, Beaugard's "After the Hunt," in honor of Captain Spaulding's visit. Of course, two of the guests at the party have made copies of this painting and, for their own reasons, want their copies displayed in place of the original. Harpo, as The Professor (of what nobody knows), and Chico, as Signor Emanuel Ravelli, roll in to add a little music and larceny, and then the fun begins. - www.marx-bros.org

Sept. 27 - Gold Diggers of 1933
Starring: Dick Powell, Warren William
Carol King, Trixie Lorraine and Polly Parker, three out-of-work showgirls living together in a cheap New York City apartment, are down to their last pair of stockings when rival Fay Fortune informs them that Broadway producer Barney Hopkins is putting on a show. - www.tcm.com

Oct. 4 - Top Hat
Starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers
A characteristic vehicle for Astaire and Rogers, it features a slight story of initially unrequited love, mistaken identities, and a requisite happy ending and allowed for frequent and breathtaking dance numbers starring the leading pair. Astaire plays an American dancer appearing in a London stage show, and Rogers was cast as the dress model he falls for at first sight. Their romance is complicated when Rogerss character mistakenly believes the smitten dancer to be a married man. - www.britannica.com

Oct. 11 - Stormy Weather
Starring: Lena Horne, Bill Robinson
Named for the 1933 song by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler, the story follows Bill Williamson (Robinson), a soldier coming home from war who wants to start a life as a performer. He meets the smoldering Selina Rogers (Horne) who helps him reach his dream but they both learn the difficulties of success. - www.broadwayblack.com

Oct. 18 - On the Town
Starring: Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra
As three sailors  Gabey, Chip, and Ozzie  begin their shore leave, Gabey falls in love with the picture of "Miss Turnstiles", who is actually Ivy Smith. The sailors race around New York attempting to find her in the brief period they have. - www.wikipedia.com

Oct. 25 - West Side Story
Starring: Natalie Wood, Rita Moreno
West Side Story is an energetic, widely-acclaimed, melodramatic musical - a modern-day, loose re-telling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet tragedy of feuding families, although the setting is the Upper West Side of New York City in the late 1950s with conflict between rival street gangs rather than families. West Side Story is still one of the best film adaptations of a musical ever created, and the finest musical film of the 60s. It arrived at a time when the silver screen was realizing tremendous competition from TV and other genres of cinematic entertainment. - www.filmsite.org
