Mads Tolling Trio with Kalil Wilson

Mads Tolling is a two-time Grammy Award Winner and the newly named winner of DownBeats Critics Rising Star Poll for violin. As a former nine-year member of both Turtle Island Quartet and bassist Stanley Clarke's band, Mads has spent most his professional life touring internationally. Since 2007 he has lead his own groups, Mads Tolling Trio & Mads Tolling Quartet. "The Playmaker" released in the fall of 2009, features Stanley Clarke, Russell Ferrante & Stefon Harris. Two more albums have been released with the MTQ since then. Mads has been featured on NPR's Morning Edition, and his recordings have received rave reviews in Downbeat Magazine, Strings Magazine, Washington Post and San Francisco Chronicle. He has performed with Chick Corea, Ramsey Lewis, Kenny Barron & Paquito D'Rivera.

In 2015 Mads received a commission from maestro Michael Morgan to compose a violin concerto for Oakland Symphony Orchestra. Mads recently premiered the piece with Morgan to much fanfare at the Paramount Theatre.

This evening Mads Tolling will return to the Sound Room with his incredible trio. Bay Area legend John R. Burr will handle the keys, and on the bass is Josh Thurston-Milgrom. The special guest this evening is the stellar jazz vocalist Kalil Wilson. Mads met Kalil on a gig in Oakland, as he was looking for the right sound for My Girl on his next album, Mads Tolling & The Mads Men.
