The Second Annual Poseidon's Parade - Rockaway Beach 2016
The second annual Poseidon's Parade, a celebration of summer and the ocean, will step off Sept. 17 at Beach 106th Street in Rockaway Beach, on the newly-rebuilt boardwalk.
It's a family-friendly art parade that encourages creativity and artistic expression, inspired by Rockaway's participation in the famous Coney Island Mermaid Parade, according to an organizers The Rockaway Mermaid Brigade - a locally-run group who have been representing the peninsula at the Coney Island event each year.
"We're honoring the ocean and artistic expression, like we experience each year in Coney Island," said Casey Brouder.
"Poseidon is a symbol that speaks to the resilience of Rockaway. After all we have been through as a community, we can pay homage to the strong and beautiful ocean we can't seem to live without."
Participants can march solo, with a group, on a float or on a bike. Prizes will be awarded in different categories highlighting the most creative costumes. The parade begins at 11 a.m. at Beach 106th Street and ends at the Beach 95th Street plaza, at the foot of the new boardwalk entrance.
After the parade, kids and their families can celebrate in the "Under the Sea Lounge" with a DJ, face painting, hula hooping, the Parks Department mobile playground, crafts and other activities at Beach 95th.
Registration $5 for marchers, and $30 per push-pull non-motorized float (this includes 5 marchers and the Float).
