Special Tour - Graceland Cemetery: Women of Influence
During Chicagos period of growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, women played a hugely influential role by participating in the Underground Railroad, exhibiting the first Modern Art paintings, creating the juvenile justice system and even foiling a plot to kill President Lincoln. This tour presented by the Chicago Architecture Foundation, celebrates the achievements of women in Chicago's history. We will focus on the influence of women on some of the city's most significant architecture, including buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and H.H. Richardson , including Marion Mahoney Griffin. Prominent Elmhurst resident and business leader, Thomas Barbour Bryan (1828-1906), was the founder of Graceland Cemetery.
Co-presented by the Elmhurst History Museum and the Elmhurst Public Library.
Note: This tour will run rain or shine and will include 2-hours of walking through the cemetery. Please bring a snack and water for the bus ride home.
