The Volunteers Jazz Band
The Volunteers Jazz Band - Playing Music to Entertain and Honor All Those Who Have Served

Most of the band members have played professionally for 20 years or more. Their repertoire includes jazz, blues, ballads, rock and patriotic selections from the big band era to the present. Our instrumentation includes alto, tenor and baritone saxes, trumpets, trombone, bass, keyboard and drums.

Tim O'Dell on Alto Sax:   Composer and Saxophonist Tim O'Dell has released five diverse albums of his original music - including three on Chicago's Southport label - to glowing, critical acclaim. "This is the sound of expanding American art" (All About Jazz).  In NYC Tim co-leads and composes for PURSUIT - a unique, 14-member ensemble. "O'Dell designs hypnotic concepts that capture the imagination" (All About Jazz).  Tim earned a Masters in Jazz Composition from the New England Conservatory and a Doctorate in Saxophone from the University of Iowa. Dr. O'Dell teaches at several Maine colleges/universities.

John Morneau on Alto and Tenor Sax: John has performed with The Temptations; Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus Band; Guy Lombardo's Royal Canadians; Liberace; the Bangor Symphony Orchestra; jazz greats Dizzy Gillespie; Clark Terry; Dick Johnson, Wayne Bergeron and Eric Marienthal; as well as having served as a regular member of various bands, most notably, the Don Doane Big Band. John is also the Director of the Bowdoin College Concert Band.

Marcia Gallagher on Keyboard: A vocalist/keyboard/bassist based out of central Maine, Marcia is an adjunct faculty member for UMA's music department, the music teacher at St. Michael School in Augusta, and has served as the musical director for the Theater at Monmouth. She performs as a solo artist, or can be backed by a trio, quartet or full band. Her song repertoire ranges from jazz standards to popular dance music.

Parker Kenyon on Trombone:  PK studied at the Berklee College of Music and has been a professional musician for over 20 years.  There are few musical instruments that he does not play, but trombone is perhaps his favorite. He is very active in the Maine musical scene including performances at the Chocolate Church and other area venues.

Paul Rice on Bass:  Paul came to Maine via New York in 1969 to major in music at Bowdoin College. Although he remains active as a trumpeter with the Bath Municipal Swing Band, his first love is the bass. He has performed with various New York rock and show bands and still  performs regularly with several area bands

Bob Modr on Trumpet:  Bob played with the U.S. Air Force Band in New York City.  He received a Master's Degree in Music Education from the New England Conservatory of Music.  He has held music teaching positions both in the United States and in England and Italy.  He has guest conducted and adjudicated music Festivals in the United States, England, Italy and Germany. He is the Music Director and  Conductor of the Harpswell Concert Band, maintains a private teaching studio, and performs regularly with several bands.

Curt Boot on Trumpet:  Curt is a retired First Sergeant of the 208th Army Reserve Band from Columbia, South  Carolina, currently living in Maine.  He graduated from the Navy School of Music.  Curt played with the O'Jays, Okays ions, Foundation's, Ross Holmes Band, jammed with Herbert Hancock in Port Finland, and formed "Ain't Legit", the first Jazz Group in 5 Points Columbia, SC. He has played the trumpet for over 40 years and currently performs in several area bands.

Chris Gutscher on Tenor Sax:  Chris joined the Navy at 17 and served aboard a destroyer in the Pacific. He regularly performs as part of Cul de Sax, a group he founded. He also plays in several area bands, including the Bowdoin College Concert Band.
